How to check eSIM support on any phone

The checker covers the common models. If yours is missing, or you want to be certain, these checks take under a minute.

  1. Dial *#06#

Open the phone app and dial *#06#. If the screen shows an EID, a 32-digit number, next to the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM chip. This works on most iPhones and Android phones.

  2. iPhone

Go to Settings > General > About and scroll down. An EID number means eSIM is supported. Settings > Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions) should also offer "Add eSIM".

  3. Android

Go to Settings > About phone and look for EID, sometimes under Status or SIM status. On Samsung, Settings > Connections > SIM manager shows "Add eSIM". On Google Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.

  4. Make sure the phone is unlocked

A carrier-locked phone refuses eSIMs from other providers even when the hardware supports eSIM. On iPhone, Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should read "No SIM restrictions". On Android, ask your carrier, or test with a SIM from a different carrier.

Watch out for regional models

Some versions of otherwise compatible phones ship without eSIM, most notably iPhones sold in mainland China and some Samsung models sold in Hong Kong. If your phone came from one of these markets, trust the checks above rather than the model name.

If your phone does not support eSIM

You will need a physical local SIM or a pocket Wi-Fi router at your destination. Buy the SIM in town rather than at the airport, where prices are usually higher.
