Australia is the trip where the wrong eSIM actually hurts

Most travel connectivity advice treats every country the same: find the cheapest gigabyte, tap buy, done. Australia breaks that rule. It is a landmass roughly the size of continental Europe with a population smaller than greater Tokyo, and almost all of its mobile infrastructure sits in a thin ribbon along the east and south coasts. Choose a plan that rides the wrong network and you can spend three days between towns with a phone that is technically connected and practically useless.

The 3G safety net no longer exists

Anything sold globally from roughly 2019 onward is normally fine. Older devices, and grey-import phones built for a single home market, are the risky ones.
  • Coverage is now closer to binary. Where you previously degraded gracefully from fast to slow, you now go from working to nothing. That makes the network your eSIM uses far more consequential than it is in, say, Europe.

Three networks, three very different maps

Australia has exactly three mobile networks, and every eSIM sold for the country is ultimately riding one or more of them.

  • Telstra has the largest geographic footprint by a wide margin. It is the network that reaches remote highways, small inland towns and much of the coastline between them.
  • Optus is strong across the cities, the major coastal corridors and most of the popular tourist routes, but thins out faster once you head inland.
